Sanding Sucks! – Seriously! Sanding isn’t enjoyable, well at least for us. Some may enjoy the monotonous task, but we would rather be completing another tasks on the project or build. Yes, sanding is part of woodworking and we can have the right equipment to make it more enjoyable and less time consuming. There are a few factors when it comes to selecting the right sanding equipment for your sanding application. First, the size of the sanding pad is critical. You don’t want a small sander if you have a large sanding task to complete. It will take more time to complete the work compared to a larger sanding pad. On the flip side, you don’t want a large sanding pad for smaller applications. It can be cumbersome and tedious. There is a good reason the industry has settled on the 5″ and 6″ sanding pad size for the ROS (random orbit sander) market. Second, the orbit radius. The larger the radius the more aggressive the sander. The smaller the radius the more gentle the sander will be.
Bosch 1250DEVS Dual-Mode 6″ Oscillating Sander
The 1250DEVS sander by Bosch is a real treat to use. It makes sanding fast, easy, and enjoyable. The dual-mode really sets this sander apart from past sanders we have used. The first mode is your standard ROS or oscillating sanding pattern. It doesn’t leave sanding marks and a nice finished is easily obtainable. If you need to remove a lot of material fast, it has a TURBO mode that removes the oscillating pattern and just makes the disk spin. With 80 grit sandpaper equipped, the removal of material is quite impressive.
The sander is a bit large and boast a little heavier than average weight but we think that is a good thing. With the variable speed setting set to high, the unit in TURBO mode, the sander really gets rocking. The large frame and heavier build comes in handy to control the unit. The auxiliary handle is a must when TURBO mode is active.

End-Grain Cutting Boards
We brought in the 1250DEVS sander by Bosch to rough and finish sand a handful of thick end-grain cutting boards. After glue-up, we would run them through the drum sander to even out the boards. Even though the drum sander had 150 grit paper in it, sanding streaks would be left as there was no oscillating feature. We slapped some 80 grit paper on the 1250DEVS sander and got to work.
With the end-grain nature of these cutting boards, sanding is a hard process. It just takes time. Well, for normal ROS sander. Not for the 1250DEVS TURBO mode. We were sanding each board within 10 minutes and moving on to the next one. We ran through 80, 100, 150, and 220 grit papers.
The sander was truly a treat to use and made the process a fraction of the time it would have been with the other sanders we have in the shop.
The Bosch 1250DEVS Dual-Mode 6″ Oscillating Sander is highly recommended to anyone that wants a dual purpose sander. It can be flipped into TURBO mode and really remove a lot of material quickly, or flipped into the oscillating mode and get a super smooth finish like a normal ROS.
Pair up the 1250DEVS sander with Bosch’s dust extractor and you have a setup that will produce very little dust.
This combination is perfect for a woodworker, contractor, painter, re-finisher, restorer, anyone that wants a sanding setup that doesn’t want any dust.
