RIDGID GEN5X Hammer Drill Review

Ridgid’s Gen5X tools are the new line of permanent magnet motor tools by Ridgid. Ridgid has made some bold statements with power concerning these tools and we have put them to the test. There are few hammer drills on the market with the power Ridgid claims to have, so this gives them shelf space in this market. 780 in-lbs peak torque for the drill puts it currently in the top 3 for torque.
Ridgid’s Gen5X tools use the same batteries as their other Ridgid 18V X4 tools. If you already have those batteries or chargers, this is a good platform to keep building on.

Nice review John.  The Gen 5X kit is really a bargains at $399.00.  All the Gen 5X tools you guys have reviewed seem to do a great job. I have the 12V drill/impact combo and for $99 I have to say it performs well.

I have sworn off Ridgid ever since they discontinued their 24V xLi line very soon after introducing it.  My Ridgid tools become obsolete about ONE year after I bought them!  They no longer have batteries for sale, which is the part that needs replacing every couple years!  NO ridgid FOREVER for me. I have now invested in Milwaukee products, partially thanks to your reviews on them.

Paul Frederick says:

A lot of these power tools are probably made in the same overseas factories today. So just pick which color you like the best now I guess.

Thank you sir for your video and especially thank you for the descriptions of each tool. Now i know how much torque for the Makita. Ty. I cannot see it of nowhere.

Hi John. I recently purchased the Gen5x package. I just started using the hammer drill and noticed it gets very hot very quickly. This never happened with X4 hammer drill. I brushed motors tend to warm up which is a problem people don’t have with brushless. I was wondering if this happened at any time during your usage of the Gen5x hammer drill? Thank you very much for your time.

Rod Long says:

Are the Gen5x tools available al la carte? So far I’ve only seen the package where you have to buy the drill, impact driver, circular and recips saws and a stupid little light? I want just the drill.

Backyard Woodworking says:

Good review I have 2 Ridgid drills both are good tools. Thanks

Mike Z says:

Nice review! And the new ridgid are very impressive!

Kevin Aguilar says:

I Like the video, but yes it gets hot quick specially when mixing concrete, I notice after one year of using it, it gets stuck when trying to switch the drill parts. So be aware of having that trouble coming.

Landon Clark says:

is it safe to hope for a brushless model of this in the near future?

Bigchuck678 says:

please tell me you guys can get your hands on the new ridgid brushless hammer drill!!
