With the new SF 6H-A22 Cordless hammer drill driver, Hilti says you can finish your applications fast, in comfort and with complete confidence. But is it fast enough for you and does extra speed inevitably result in lower runtime?

The newest addition to Hilti’s 22 V battery platform combines a powerful motor and gearing with the latest technology from Hilti.
An electronic clutch means there is no mechanical wear on that component, while Active Torque Control (ATC) offers you improved safety. But Roger discovers another, somewhat quirky feature about this drill that Hilti doesn’t mention. Did they even know it was there we wonder?

Torque… It’s a bit of a jungle to find out. So far I’ve not been able to find a definitive answer of what manufactures mean by hard vs. soft torque. Take two machines I have with more or less same drilling capabilities on paper. Milwaukee M18 BLPD (believe it’s model 2702 in US) and Bosch PSB 18 LI-2 Ergonomic (very important it’s the ergo version the “regular” is a very different machine and not brushless(!) – wonder why they didn’t call it LI-3 etc.). Two *very* different machines meant for two (also very) different segments. Both machines drills steel 13mm and 38mm in wood. That’s where the similarity ends:
Bosch: 28nm “soft” and 32 nm “hard”. Milwaukee: Specs only says 60 nm. A same class drill like DeWalt DCD790D2 again with same drilling capabilities and is also rated 60nm for hard torque but it also says soft torque 23nm. Looking at many other drill data I get the impression that soft torque is _vastly_ more important than “hard” torque and that numbers for soft torque seems much more in corresponding to the stated drilling capabilities.
Clearly the Milwaukee should be the strongest (of the two, Bosch and Milwaukee) so it’s odd at nearly double power capabilities are the same?!! In real world the Bosch actually feels stronger(!) especially in 2nd gear. Milwaukee doesn’t like starting high loads and sudden changes in torque it doesn’t like either. The Bosch however happily gives all it got at long as you keep it still so the wrist protection doesn’t kick in. The Bosch is also *much* quieter than the Milwaukee. It has a much higher PWM frequency outside human hearing (Milwaukee is very much in the human area). The Bosch motor doesn’t has as strong magnets (poles) but it makes up for that with higher RPM. The strong magnets make the casing “sing” and that’s also a very big part of the noise. The air noise itself may be a little higher on the Bosch but it’s nowhere near as disturbing as PWM and noise from the strong poles.
The Bosch can probably not stand up to hard pro use as well as the Milwaukee but for my heart this is a very tough battle and I’m leaning towards the Bosch. Because the Bosch has one downside I really don’t like: The day you need to replace the chuck it’s up hill. Can be done if you think it through but probably not without destroying the chuck. It’s not fixed the traditional way with left screw but only loctite – and presumably a very strong one. Brute force may not be the answer but instead grind it of and make a hole for a counter screw is you can find a left thread cutter. On the other hand the stock chuck on the Bosch is a quite nice Röhm that runs very straight in comparison to the Milwaukee which wasn’t that great especially considered it’s a pro tool. A Röhm Extra-RV on that and it’s running great – like the Bosch.

It’s true, the torque on those drills isn’t measured with a standard method so each manufacturer claims extremely high torque which is of course a fake
I believe only bosch is close to the true while Milwaukee, Makita Metabo, Dewalt and Hitachi are faking torque. There is NO way Hitachi to have 136Nm or metabo 120Nm and Milwaukee 135Nm and bosch to be equal with them in high torque applications!

Good point about the ‘claimed torque’ values. Power = torque x speed and with the right gear ratio it is possible to generate more torque at the expense of speed. I like the fact that Hilti have a safety cut out if the drill snatches since a the higher the torque the greater the risk of wrist injury.

I have a question about angle grinders. I have a angle grinder (2000 W) which can use 180mm discs so can I use 115 mm discs from my 600 W angle grinder on that larger one? Do I need to replace the guard too? Iam new to angle grinders.

A few manufacturers (mainly German) are adding the stop control to avoid injury if the bit snags. Personally… I don’t like it. I have a beefy BHP481 and I never have it on drill mode. Always on driver/clutch control which serves the exact same purpose without stopping the drill. Would it put me off buying a drill, probably not. Would I look for that feature in a drill? No. I think Hilti are on the right track with this one but I’ve used the cordless drills in the past and they’re always heavy, bulky and awkward.

Hi Roger 10/10 for effort on the video but I know you are desperate to get that subscriber rate higher. It’s once you are 100k + that the youtube can start giving back for the time and effort you are putting in.

My suggestions are that you are going to have to go into a lot more detail on the tools you do get in for review. If this is £400 for the average consumer in the UK with 2 x 5.2amp batteries compare it to the equivalent £400 kit from the Dewalt, Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee etc. I know it’s a double edged sword as getting those companies to send out samples/review units you need as high a number of viewers/subscribers that wet their appetites but you will get there eventually. Try and find a retailer in the UK that will send you the tools to demo/review with you in return recommending the links to their site and thus the tools if they are good.

Points to double down on power tool reviews:

– Measure the weight of the bare tool and then also with the battery. You’d be amazed on how many companies and/or sellers do not give both. Easy to do – kitchen scales are less than a tenner everywhere. We always want to know the weights.
– Give us a description of the feel/grip of the tool. I find my Makita combi is best in class of all the combi’s I have used from £50 all the way up to £250 for the bare tools.
– Give an insight into the platform when talking about battery powered tools. Without going to Hilti’s site (i’d rather watch a video review) I have no idea what other battery operated tools they offer if I was to ever dip my toes into their battery platform.
– Always re-iterate to the viewers that it’s never worth going above 8mm drill bits in masonry with combi’s – they just struggle too much and if you ever needed to drill a bigger hole with any mild regularity then even the cheapest of powered SDS’s would have them for breakfast, and so they are worth the investment. 8mm and below = combi, 10mm and above = sds (mains/some good battery units). Simple as that really.
– Talk about the chuck, if it’s not a branded metal one (can’t remember the name of the company that licenses it out to the tool manufacturers) then how is it? – is it a good compromise for a plastic chuck?
– Barring Hilti as they always sell direct to consumer link to tools in the description with an Amazon affiliate link. This means you will get a small fee from Amazon if you think the tool is the business and can recommend it.
– Have a look at the following channels on youtube. They are great reviewers/instructionals and with a butchers into a few of their videos should give you some good pointers on editing and more topics. Sort by “most popular” to see what type of videos can transcend worldwide and not just alienate yourself to UK viewers.For example a video about 240v panels will be UK specific but a video on how to plan and tile a shower from start to finish can be worldwide. You don’t have to out and out copy the videos but they will give you ideas on what people are watching and like:

– oz tool talk
– ultimate handyman
– tool craze
– plumberparts
– tools in action

Overall just thought I would try and add my 2 cents in as I know you are eager to grow the channel and I enjoy watching your videos. Hope the above is useful to you in some way.
